First of all, why did "buttercup" ever become a term of endearment? Picture Juliet, out on her balcony, looking down at a Romeo crying, "Buttercup, oh buttercup, wherefore art thou buttercup?"
It sounds okay, until you really think about the word, "buttercup." Enough to get the mental image I'm getting. I'm getting like...one of those paper cupcake liners, filled with butter.
Substitute: "Cup of butter, oh cup of butter, wherefore art thou cup of butter?"
Suddenly, this Romeo:
Turns into this one. Except he's not a girl. Deep-fried butter still applies.
But because we all love the Princess Bride, I won't be too judgemental; there's something sweet about "buttercup."
It's also the name of a pretty yellow flower- and as we all know...(or are about to learn)...I do love yellow flowers.
